I agree that Bacall didn't really meet the quoted requirements, but she won two Tonys and played more than 2,000 performances on Broadway. So she seems worthy.

I loved Robin Williams in Bengal Tiger, but I guess in the minority in questioning whether it's been wise for this to have been done for Williams and Gandolfini and now Rivers. But only for one reason: the more people they do this for, the harder they are going to find justifying not doing this for others. Just a few years ago, when this was still done only rarely, no one would have been upset about it not being done for Rivers.

If they can deal with it, fine. I'm all for honoring folks. But they're going to have to start honoring an awful lot of people or there will be plenty of annoyance when people who've done a lot more Broadway than Williams, Gandolfini and Rivers put together but are not well known to the general public do not get the same honor.
