| In this case, "you just don't get it" merely means "you just don't agree with me". Your assertion that the gesture is meaningless is nothing more than your personal opinion, not some incontrovertible fact. It is not based on anything else, no matter how much you bloviate. You feel one way, MANY others feel differently, and that's all she wrote. | |

| When the League is forced to reverse itself and do something it decided NOT to do, what is the meaning of the gesture? Surely not that the League thinks she deserves the honor. | |

| i totally understand your point - or at least the way you see it - but i completely disagree that having acknowledged that the outcry was so great they reversed the decision somehow makes it meaningless. i suspect it means even more. though, i suspect it had far more to do with heavy hitters and big time supporters railing than with most of the people here (and elsewhere) patting themselves on the back. i understand why you disagree. but unless you have proof - or even state you heard for a fact - that the folks who made this decision consider it meaningless you're only transferring. do you have this data? if not, the folks arguing it means something is every bit as valid as your insistence it means nothing. regardless, the gesture as public recognition of by the league is happening. everyone is free to spin it as they like. i hope this leads to less, not more, or at least more stringently-determined decisions to dim the lights. there have been some that were questionable and omissions i find unforgivable. i hate that it is so tied to celebrity. now thats it is seen as an insult not to dim the lights i'm hoping as a corrective the number will decrease and we can return to the time when, i agree, it meant more. | |

| So when the Drama Desk Awards reinstated the Best Orchestrations category after discontinuing--as a result of, mostly, protest and outcry--it was a meaningless gesture? | |

| I have no way of know the answer to that, nor do I think it is comparable. But if they gave the award to one orchestrator and then, after a hue and cry from the public, took it back and gave it to someone else, yes I would think that would diminish the award and render it a meaningless gesture. | |

| It's a completely comparable situation. You're being obtuse if you refuse to recognize that. But given the tenor of your posts, I'm not surprised. | |

| But that of course is not remotely what happened with the dimming. Nobody's honor was revoked in order to give it to Rivers. | |

| Since it is their decision to make, isn't it their right to change their decision? Do you have personal evidence they were forced to do so? | |

| it is obvious. and yes I am sure you think it isn't. But then again I do not have personal evidence you are not absurdly naive. Enjoy your "victory." | |
