Artistic Director Hal Brooks opens the 2014-2015 season with Anton Chekhov’s 19th Century classic Uncle Vanya– a searing study of lives less lived.

“At the start of our 31st Season, it was important for us to do a show that emphasizes our company,” said Artistic Director Hal Brooks. “Uncle Vanya is a play I’ve always wanted to direct. It is fundamentally crafted for actors and our company has the advantage of years working together onstage—it’s going to be moving, funny, poignant, and most of all, an ensemble piece.”

Chekhov’s slyly comic and quietly powerful classic invites us into a world of agony, ecstasy, and absurdity. When the arrival of a worldly professor and his bewitching wife shatters the peace of Vanya and Sonya’s country estate, a series of flirtations, disappointments, confessions, and revelations follow as this motley crew demand their moment in the sun—but never seem to know what to do when they get it.

Performances of Uncle Vanya will take place September 9—October 12 (see schedule above) at The Pearl Theatre. Critics are welcome as of Tuesday, September 16 for an official opening of Sunday, September 21 at 7pm. The Pearl Theatre is located at 555 West 42nd Street in New York City. Tickets are $65 ($50 previews, $39 seniors, $20 student rush, $20 Thursday rush) and can be purchased by visiting pearltheatre.org or calling 212.563.9261.

The cast of Uncle Vanya features Pearl Resident Acting Company (RAC) Members Rachel Botchan (Yelena), Robin Leslie Brown (Marina), Bradford Cover (Astrov), Dominic Cuskern (Professor Serebriakov), Brad Heberlee (Waffles), Chris Mixon (Vanya), and Carol Schultz (Mrs. Vointsky) The cast will be joined by guest artists Joie Bauer (Workman) and Michelle Beck (Sonya).

The creative team includes Jason Simms (Sets), Seth Reiser (Lighting), Barbara A. Bell (Costumes), Florian Staab (Sound), Kate Farrington (Dramaturg) and Kevin Clutz (Production Stage Manager).

About The Pearl Theatre Company

Founded in 1984 by a small troupe of artists in Chelsea, The Pearl has grown into a renowned Off-Broadway company. The Pearl connects audiences to timeless classic plays, while providing an artistic home to theatre professionals, especially its core company of resident actors. As New York’s only classical resident company, The Pearl has produced a body of work encompassing the full breadth of theatre history, from ancient Greek tragedy to contemporary works rooted in the classics.

The Pearl has garnered numerous awards, including most recently, a special 2011 Drama Desk Award for “notable productions of classic plays and nurturing a stalwart resident company of actors.”

In October 2012, The Pearl celebrated the opening its first permanent home, located at 555 West 42nd Street.
