If you go down the list of every Tony nominee, it's quickly clear that it would not be a good idea to dim the lights for every nominee. Even if you take producers out of the mix, some pretty iffy shows have been nominated. People who appeared in one or two Broadway shows and are really unknown have been nominated in weak seasons, or sometimes because the person gave a really first-rate performance, but still really did not have a major career in the theatre.
