While watching her appearance on Good Morning America today, I had a similar reaction.
I think this is the work of PR person being great at their job.
I am all for non traditional casting to breathe new life into shows and breaking ground. I find Norm Lewis going into Phantom to be a great example. It is also a great reason to build a PR campaign but his role is one that has been around for more than 20 years.
The role of Cinderella on Broadway has only been around a little over a year. Yes she is the first African American, but she is only the third person to play her on Broadway at all. If they were saying she was the first African American to play the part in a professional production, I would pay more attention to it.
But I guess the average person won't know that the stage show has never been on Broadway before.
So, BRAVO to their PR folk

I just think it's a great thing that something in the performing fine arts (i.e. something other than TV and movies) is getting a bit of national attention (even if it's understood that the real news item is the race of the actress in question, more than anything having to do with the show or the performance - if the new Cinderella were white, surely it would not be a big news item at all).

Whether we agree that this is big news or not, it's great to see anything like this covered nationally.
