SCREENED IN CINEMAS INTERNATIONALLY ON

OCTOBER 27 & 29, 2014

Due to unprecedented audience demand, NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE is pleased to announce special encore screenings of The National Theatre of Great Britain’s acclaimed Olivier Award winning production of FRANKENSTEIN, a play by Nick Dear based on Mary Shelley’s novel. The production stars Olivier Award winners Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, and directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle, in select cinemas worldwide on October 27 & 29, 2014. Tickets go on sale beginning this Friday, September 12. Dates vary at venues internationally and further screenings will follow.

The production was a sell-out hit at the National Theatre in 2011, and the broadcast has since become an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in cinemas around the world. In this new adaptation, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternated in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature. National Theatre Live filmed FRANKENSTEIN twice so audiences could experience Cumberbatch and Miller in each role.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller shared both the Olivier Award and London Evening Standard Award for Best Actor for their respective performances. The production won Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards for Best Actor (Cumberbatch) and Best Design (Mark Tildesley). Danny Boyle received the What’s on Stage Award for Best Director.

About FRANKENSTEIN

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. A sneak peek of the production can be seen HERE.

Why has no Broadway producer chosen this show (possibly with the same cast) to mount?

It was and is a huge hit, yet the states only get a film.

But other venues that more typically carry the NT Live broadcasts are, as usual, doing their own independent scheduling.

Thanks - hopefully, that means other areas will be getting more screenings, too. HEre, it's still only listed for the 16th, though we usually get repeats (and don't usually get the first night).
