| Best of luck but I do not understand the Hilary Mantel craze. I kind of understand it in the UK, she worked her way up the rungs of the literary world and she's a good writer. But in terms of what makes her books and subsequent adaptations special… I don't get it. | |

| I would typically love books like this, but I couldn't get through "Wolf Hall," mainly to do with the author's annoying idiosyncrasies in her use of pronouns. She would use "he" and "him" to refer to her main character, no matter how confusing that would make a sentence. Something like "The butcher chopped the lamb into thick cuts of meat, while he shouted and stood on one leg." That's just a crazy example to illustrate, but in a normal book that sentence would mean the butcher was shouting on one leg. In Hilary Mantel's book you're supposed to know the "his" refers to the other character. Except when it doesn't. You had to work it out for each reference which "he" she was referring to. I found it maddening. Obviously a play will have none of those problems. | |

| The books are brilliantly conceived, deftly written and make for wonderfully entertaining reading. Her take on the history and personalities of that period are completely original and thought provoking. As for the pronouns: not a real problem. Certainly not for the Mann Booker judges...TWICE! | |

| Actually, the comma wouldn't have appeared in the made-up example I scribbled above. The comma would have made it too clear. | |

| i've read each of these books three times. they're like heroin. if i could take a pill and erase the memory of reading them so i could read them again, i would. she's a terrific writer writing about events intensely rich in drama peopled by huge, contradictory, complex characters whose exploits changed the course of history. what's special about the books is the same thing that made the six wives of henry the 8th special, and by a (very) small extension what made elizabeth r special, elizabeth and essex special, and blanchett's two elizabeth movies special. as well as a man for all seasons, becket, and even lion in winter. cromwell (via wolsey) is an unique way in and a damn good one. bottom line, though, you figured out for yourself - she's a good writer. a very, very good writer working in a genre not know for producing great writers or great works. i don't know what the adaptions are like but i can't wait to find out. i'm glad they weren't scooped up by pbs or hbo and made into a mini series. | |

| no except about it. a us-produced mini series could well have impeded a broadway transfer. | |

| Since neither the Broadway transfer nor the TV adaptation -- also scheduled for 2015 -- has a definite date, there's really no way of knowing. But my guess the producers are not as squeamish as you about the dangers the miniseries poses to its stage prospects (which could, in fact, be boosted rather than impeded by previous exposure). | |

| The Times piece says only that they were "based on" or "adapted from" Hilary Mantel's novels--what, by magic? By an anonymous writer? By Mantel herself? As the Red Queen admonishes Alice, "You mustn't leave out so many details!" | |
