i've read each of these books three times. they're like heroin. if i could take a pill and erase the memory of reading them so i could read them again, i would.

she's a terrific writer writing about events intensely rich in drama peopled by huge, contradictory, complex characters whose exploits changed the course of history.

what's special about the books is the same thing that made the six wives of henry the 8th special, and by a (very) small extension what made elizabeth r special, elizabeth and essex special, and blanchett's two elizabeth movies special. as well as a man for all seasons, becket, and even lion in winter.

cromwell (via wolsey) is an unique way in and a damn good one.

bottom line, though, you figured out for yourself - she's a good writer. a very, very good writer working in a genre not know for producing great writers or great works.

i don't know what the adaptions are like but i can't wait to find out. i'm glad they weren't scooped up by pbs or hbo and made into a mini series.

except that they HAVE been made into a UK mini-series, starring Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, and Jonathan Pryce ..... Peter Kosminsky directing.

no except about it. a us-produced mini series could well have impeded a broadway transfer.

... the miniseries is being co-produced by US Masterpiece Entertainment, and as a consequence will be shown on PBS.

will to be shown before the broadway run and therefor impede the chances of it transferring?

Since neither the Broadway transfer nor the TV adaptation -- also scheduled for 2015 -- has a definite date, there's really no way of knowing. But my guess the producers are not as squeamish as you about the dangers the miniseries poses to its stage prospects (which could, in fact, be boosted rather than impeded by previous exposure).

agreed so, again, one of your rushes to correct proves less than insightful.

mockingbirdgirl was giving information germane to the conversation, not insight.

depends on how much weight you'd apply "germane" in this case. felt like another tiresome rush to correct. not wrong just tedious.

Indeed. Surprising that needs to be explained, really.
