Interesting article, but COPPELIA wasn't in City Ballet's repertoire in the 60s.

My, but he is full of self-important, lofty ideas about art and artists and acceptable markers for achievement. The idea that "pop cultural" success is at odds with artistry still strikes me as overly simplistic and narrow, of another era. I wouldn't quibble with most of the KCH selections; they pleased more than they displeased. To cavil and carp because, say Tom Hanks isn't Fred Astaire -- I bet Mr. Astaire would balk at the comparison. (Why aren't we more concerned with all of the non-citizens being recognized? I still don't get that.)

No it wasn't. This is a New Yorker editing error: they probably meant 1974 which was, I believe, the year Balanchine and Danilova produced their version for McBride.
A wonderful article--thank you Alcindoro--and, sadly, only too true. But the Kennedy Center is hardly alone is genuflecting before celebrity and pop culture. That Jane Lynch is hosting the 60th anniversary of the Chicago Lyric Opera is only one more instance of cultural institutions believing--not necessarily incorrectly--that the only way to draw audiences and raise funds is the celebrity way.
