Saw this wonderful play at yesterday's matinee-Didn't know much about it-and was pleasantly surprised-it's one of Tom Stoppard's more accessible works-and Rosemary Harris as usual is divine-a really exquisite performance! And still such a beautiful woman-I was in second row and she has such an inner glow that it's hard to take your eyes off her.Romola Garai playing her older, slightly notorious sister in 1930 makes a terrific new York debut-the whole cast is wonderful! And Carey Perloff's smooth direction makes the three hours fly by-there were a lot of empty seats yesterday, but once the word gets out, that should change-I plan on going back-it's that good

It's a superb production, perfectly acted and visually stunning, seamlessly shifting between the two time periods. Romola Garai is smashing. And Rosemary Harris remains such a vital theatrical creature. The painter and his son (can't recall names and don't have my playbill handy) were both great, too.

The biddies around me seemed to aggressively hate it, though I guess that's not surprising. Even at his most accessible, Stoppard is still complex and unapologetically intellectual.

how's the rest of the cast? Any standouts in the ensemble? I hope I make it back to NY in time to catch this production!

There's a bit of discussion in the "Playbill" about the fact that the play is rarely produced, because of the difficulty of finding a lot of fine Indian (male) actors. Two in the ensemble stand out. The artist, who is one of the leads, and the tour guide, who leads a scholar on a tour of India. He is the head of an Association of teachers of English in India. He is very funny, a bundle of nerves and enthusiasm.

If they think there's a shortage of talented South Asian actors, it's because they're not looking hard enough. There's quite a few.

The play has a fairly large ensemble, and I didn't notice any weak links. Firdous Bamji is excellent as Flora's painter/love interest, and Bhavesh Patel is equally good as his son in the 1980s section of the plot. Neal Huff does well as the academic writing Flora's biography. The wonderful Ajay Naidu is featured in a role far too small for his considerable talents.
