I loved the book. The play...not so much. I enjoyed the first act, but the second act was too long. Too much time and effects were spent on the sensory overload that Christopher experiences on his journey to London. We get the point. Let's move on.

There were some interesting bits of staging, but I didn't understand the point of having all the actors on the stage for much of the play. It really felt like it was to give them something to do rather than to add to the story telling.

The acting was very good, especially that of Alex Sharp, who plays Christopher, but the accents for some of the actors in the smaller roles seemed to come and go.

The staging seemed too big and overdone for the story. There were too many special effects for my liking. I'd suggest reading the book and skipping the play.

Reading the Book vs Seeing the Play

I read the book and found it very interesting (although not great lit) and have recommended it to a few -- some liked it, others not. The books linear plot (structured by the character) is easily recalled and so, last night, when I saw the play I was uninvolved. The lady sitting next to me hadn't read the book and liked the play a lot, while her husband had also read the book and shared my lack of enthusiasm. I didn't hate this production but didn't enjoy it. I think, like Mathilda, many will wonder why it's so popular.
