Segal Theatre Center at The Graduate Center, CUNY is pleased to announce the full lineup of its eleventh annual PRELUDE Festival. Dedicated to artists at the forefront of contemporary New York City theatre and performance, PRELUDE 2014 features an array of artists working in theatrical and interdisciplinary performance. The festival gives audiences and artists a survey of the current New York moment via in-process presentations, installations, and discussions - all completely free to the public. Helmed by curators Chloë Bass (Artist), Jackie Sibblies Drury (Playwright), Allison Lyman (Dramaturg/Producer), Sarah Rose Leonard (Director/Dramaturg), and festival founder Frank Hentschker (Executive Director, Martin E. Segal Theatre Center), PRELUDE 2014 provides a unique preview of new work being created by groundbreaking New York theatre and performance artists working in theatrical, interdisciplinary, and mixed media performance. The festival is a public lab for sharing new ideas through brief workshop performances, readings, installations, participatory events, panels, and discussions featuring some of the most exciting artists working today. PRELUDE is the only festival of its kind in New York that remains completely free and open to the public. Beginning Wednesday October 8, PRELUDE 2014 will feature more than 35 artists, in addition to 5 conversations and 3 public workshops, linked thematically by the following conversations: Care's Hiding Place; or, Is care a form of participation? Is live performance a gift economy? Which way does care flow, and how can we track it? Where do artists and audiences make space for care? Honesty is Good, and Honesty is Bad; or, True things are what? Is honesty different than reality, is it possible to render through performance? Does honesty emerge from irony, or is it the other way around? For makers of performance, is honesty a goal, a compliment, or a liability? Endurance/Loss; or, How long is too long? How does exhaustion and the act of overcoming exhaustion play a part in the creation of art making? How do these emotional and physical states become part of the work itself? All Together All Alone; or, How to intimate the intimate? Is theatre a kind of formal intimacy? What is the relationship between the personal and the political, and what are the possibilities and limitations created by a shared present?
