Reading the Book vs Seeing the Play

I read the book and found it very interesting (although not great lit) and have recommended it to a few -- some liked it, others not. The books linear plot (structured by the character) is easily recalled and so, last night, when I saw the play I was uninvolved. The lady sitting next to me hadn't read the book and liked the play a lot, while her husband had also read the book and shared my lack of enthusiasm. I didn't hate this production but didn't enjoy it. I think, like Mathilda, many will wonder why it's so popular.
