Happy to be able to post my thoughts, and Rob encouraged me to share them anyway. (While not a shill for the show, yes, Rob Taylor is a good friend and has been the violinist for shows I've MDd in the past.)
I was completely blown away by the performances, direction and choreography. Having never seen a NYC workshop (I've seen many at Barrington Stage) I was caught off guard by how completely staged this was. Although LCT offered them lights, sets, etc., the creatives opted for a more bare-bones approach, though only in those areas. The musician/actors were all top notch and I can't recall a time when I cared so much about so many well-drawn characters. (There is also a small, offstage pit which often gets to relax.) One thing the buzz doesn't seem to mention is that each member of the band is very damaged in some way by their war experience, and must juggle these demons. It definitely hearkens to The Best Years of Our Lives. The story is quite timely, has several surprises and I was really moved by it in the end. It certainly needs some tweaking, but it was fun to see everyone in the audience jumping for their cell phones at the start of intermission.
