Mame-why is V

Posted by: bearcat 04:02 pm EDT 09/13/14

Victoria Clark never mentioned for Mame when a revival is brought up? She mentions on playbill.com this week that it is a role she'd like to play - and she is full of the requisite warmth and can work up her own kind of zany.

I'd like to see her essay Rose in Gypsy too.

this roles would be perfect for her.

she would have been perfect for Maria (von Trapp) and Marion Paroo years ago,
also King's Anna (I told think she's too old for this now), Fiona in Brigadoon

and how about Grey Gardens - either role. Providence be kind-

I know this is a kind of catty thing to say

because, Lord knows, she seems like a lovely woman, but I feel like Mame shouldn't have a lisp.

Maybe that was supposed to be some sort of joke, but...

I thought you were going to say "Because she isn't a star." Which wouldn't have been catty, but would have been the truth.

MAME is a star vehicle. You need someone whose name goes above the title.

Victoria Clarke is a wonderful actress, but has no name recognition outside of All That Chat.

You would have loved Baranski in the role.

I think Victoria Clark is very talented, but she strikes me as too matronly to be an effective Mame.

If Mame isn't a role for a "matron," nothing is.

I really don't think of Mame as a matron in the traditional sense--settled, content with domesticity, very Lane Bryant.

I think you're pigeon-holing her. She was anything but matronly in FOLLIES in LA...

yes, I see that.

do you think she'd ever be considered for Aunt Eller, Nettie, Mother Abbess?

Nettie, Mother Abbess - certainly, but I remember Ms. Clark as being a very funny lady in "Titanic", one of the biggest sources of comic relief in that piece. Why not "High Spirits" if they ever revive that or "Darling of the Day"?

YES-Encores with maybe Douglas Sills in the Vincent Price part

"Not On Your Nellie"- yes, brilliant in our own minds

also, how about her in the Eileen Herlie Parts in Ah Wilderness and All American?

Personally, I adore Victoria Clark and have loved everything I've seen her do. Her performance in Light in the Piazza was genius. I just don't see her as Mame.

My first choice for Mame would be Christine Ebersole. I would love to see her Mame. I think she'd be perfect.

I also would love, love, love to see Patti take a crack at Mame.

Hoping to see a revival of Mame sometime soon! We're loooooong overdue.....
