PS-I don't like the masochism and violence portrayed. However, I think it's going to win. It will get another dynamic into the theater. (Again-I kind of don't want to see it because I don't support how it portrays women and violence against them.)

Fun Home should've moved last season. Its time is past. I wouldn't be surprised if THEY canceled-and American Pscyho takes the Circle.

Win what? The Tony? Based on what criteria?

I'm not even convinced it will open, and no one is yet convinced it will be any good, not to mention the whole it's September thing and nothing has opened yet that will actually be in the running.

It's a daring musical that will bring in a non-traditional audience (male, straight, young). I think a lot works in its favor, my own opinion of the source material notwithstanding.

The same "non-traditional audience(male, straight, young)" that made BLOODY, BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON the last Broadway hit for Benjamin Walker?

It's also the audience that the "Rocky" producers thought would come in droves. I also remember when we thought that "Rocky" would be a major contender for awards.

Neither happened.

And "Rocky" is a heartwarming story. Someone mentioned "Sweeney Todd", which has a moderate amount of gore, but there is also a high melodrama and multiple tender love stories running through it.

"American Psycho" is a narcissistic murderer who brutally slaughters woman on his streak of nihilistic mayhem and madness. The main character is so reprehensible that it inspired his author to write a follow-up book in which he (Brett Easton Ellis) was haunted by the character he created.

If they can sell it to Wall Street financiers as a loving self-portrait at $500 a seat, they might just pull off the greatest piece of pop-art and cultural commentary ever created and run for years. But I don't know if the people who love the source material are the people who go to musicals.

This is a lot more mainstream than that-the book and film are popular.

In fact, the movie was something of a disappointment at the box office.

Could you please tell us what's going to win all the Tonys in 2057? It's NEVER too early* to start speculating!

I think its time passed. I say that in sadness and yet with an awareness of how fickle and in the moment this business is.

They should cancel.

I say American Psycho, Finding Neverland and perhaps The Last Ship will overshadow it, picking up steam in the awards leading up to the Tonys.

There is a time for everything and Fun Home is passe now.

Fun Home should cancel because three musicals that so far have all had decidedly mixed receptions are coming to Broadway? Actually, we're really not sure yet that American Psycho will come to Broadway.

Dozens of award-winning hit shows and classics would have canceled if the creators and producers thought that way.

And Mr. President would have won the best musical Tony because every other musical that was considering coming in would have canceled rather than compete with a show that was certain to be a monster hit.

well that's no reason not to announce that it's already better than everything else that hasn't opened or even announced it's coming now is it???

the award for best choreography has already been announced why not the tony for best musical as well?

It's a shame this forum isn't archived, so we could see who (if anyone) was accurately calling "Gentleman's Guide" the winner nine months in advance.

And honestly, they should cancel their engagement because you think their time has passed?

What hubris!

Everyone pack it in! bwaydiva1 has spoken!

This just underscores how ridiculous it is to be making these predictions before most of these shows have played a single performance. You were certain Fun Home would win all the awards, then one tiny little thing changed and now you're certain it won't. How many more things will change between now and the actual awards? God, I wish people could wait until shows actually opened before handicapping their awards prospects. Even then is too early, but at least it would be based on some semblance of reality.

It's a bu$ine$$ and there is only so much room for certain kinds of shows.

And from what I've seen, American Psycho has a lot of selling power.

How much will change? Couldn't say! (Although it seems to me the season is pretty well established now. The only thing we're sitting on is the official announcements for American Psycho and the theater for Finding Neverland (pretty sure it's the Lunt-Fontanne) as well as the official announcement of Bring Up the Bodies/Wolf Hall for the Winter Garden. I guess we're sort of waiting on Gigi (which I'm guessing is next fall) and Can-Can (no idea) But for new stuff it's pretty well established.)
