LES MIZ revival: director's choice or author's?

Posted by: Teacher64 09:36 am EDT 09/14/14

I finally saw the new LES MISERABLES revival yesterday. I was not looking forward to it as I saw the 25th Anniversary tour and it was not that good. I thought this revival was just the 25th Anniversary tour landing on Broadway, but it wasn't. I was quite surprised by how much I liked it. The cast is top-notch and they seem to have solved some of the "what do we do without the turntable?" problems that the 25th Anniversary tour were unable to solve. I actually found it one of the most moving LES MIZ's I have ever seen, and possibly one of the best sung.

One thing that struck me was that whenever a character died they brought up a bright light on that person and then brought it down to indicate they had died. I remember this from the original production. So, was this a creative decision of the original directors, or the original lighting designer? Or is that something that is written into the script by the authors? Is this an idea being stolen or borrowed or is it just an accepted part of LES MIZ?

The idea originates in Victor Hugo's novel, where he speaks of the light of God shining on those characters at the point of death.
