I'm not sure why it has never been revived on Broadway, though the fact that the movie is fairly accurate to the play may be why, but I can say that it is definitely being done outside of NY - just saw a fine production this past March here in the Phoenix area- my TalkinBroadway review is below.

Frederick Knott's other thriller Wait Until Dark not only received a nice production from a community theatre in town shortly after the Dial M production, but Wait Until Dark is also being presented this season at one of the main professional companies in town.

So, revivals of his plays are definitely alive and well out here in regional theatre. In fact, I've quickly discovered after moving from the NYC area to Phoenix a year ago that many shows you'd never see again on Broadway are done continually outside of NYC - or at least in Phoenix!

They did a gorgeous production of DIAL M at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (the old Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre location, in Jupiter FL) last year. It got many Carbonell nominations, as I recall. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

With the right stars (and maybe Stephen Daldry?) "Dial M" does seem like a near sure-thing on Broadway. It is also a standby in Minneapolis. The Jungle Theater has done it four or five times in the last 20 years -- big hit and artistic success every time.
