The author treats Streisand with respect, humor, and just enough skepticism to prove he's not a pushover. He gets her to talk about current art, fillers (has she ever commented on this before?) and even breaks what is, for me at least, a little news when he mentions that she is making notes for a memoir. He also wittily alludes to several things -- tastes like butter, her habit, noted in "Buyer and Cellar," of seeing herself in everything, and ,at the end, "Mommie Dearest" -- without actually mentioning them. This is something quite beyond the everyday hacks who slave away at Entertainment Weekly or TMZ.

The "Funny Girl" slip up is almost amusing in this context, and no big deal. I've come to look for Bernstein's byline in the Times. And, when you check his resume, you can see he worked his way up to the position. A bit different than Chelsea Clinton opening the door at NBC and announcing, "I'm here."
