BOOTCANDY Yesterday

As ribald as it is ragged, BOOTYCANDY is some kind of tour de force. It doesn't quite cohere as a unified work or statement--I don't think it's meant to--but it's a blast of seditious energy. It's bound to offend some--often a good thing--with its smart, and sometimes smart-aleky, subversions, but it's never dull. The meta elements are a bit shopworn these days, but beyond this the writing is generally superb and very, very funny. And the cast is sublime. It's basically a portrait of the artist as a (gay and black) young man, but it's chockablock with ideas pertaining to sexuality and race and culture that are worth paying attention to even as you're doubled over. A grand snap in a z formation to Playwright's Horizons for presenting this.
