SD: The Old Globe Announces its 2015 Summer Season

Posted by: BillEadie 04:04 pm EDT 09/28/14

The Old Globe will celebrate its 80th season next summer, and its home, Balboa Park, will celebrate its centennial. Like this summer, the Globe promises a total of four productions, two of them Shakespeare and performed on the outdoor Lowell Davis Festival Stage.

The season opens with Twelfth Night, directed by Rebecca Taichman. It runs outdoors June 21 - July 26. (I saw the version Ms. Taichman directed for DC's Shakespeare Theatre and Princeton's McCarter Theatre, and it was visually spectacular.)

Darko Tresnjak, who headed the Globe's Shakespeare Festival for several years, returns, bringing his Hartford Stage production of Kiss Me Kate. Peggy Hickey choreographs, and the production runs July 1 - August 2.

The Globe mounts the West Coast premiere of Ken Ludwig's Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery July 24 - August 23, and the summer season closes out with Scott Ellis' production of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, which runs August 16 - September 20.

The Globe will also help Balboa Park to celebrate with some free film showings on Monday nights in the Festival Theatre. The films will each have a Shakespeare theme: Laurence Olivier's "Henry V," Orson Welles' version of Falstaff, "Chimes at Midnight," Joss Whedon's recent version of "Much Ado About Nothing," and Robert Wise's film of the musical, "West Side Story."
