SAN FRANCISCO PLAYHOUSE ANNOUNCES THE CAST OF “PROMISES, PROMISES”

PROMISES, PROMISES Burt Bacharach (music), Hal David (lyrics), and Neil Simon (book) Director: Bill English Music Directors: David Möschler and Kevin Rowland Choreography: Kimberly Richards November 18, 2014 through January 10, 2015 Previews November 18 through 21 at 8pm Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm Saturdays at 3pm and Sundays at 2pm NO SHOW: November 27, December 24, 25 or January 1st PRESS OPENING: Saturday, November 22nd at 8pm
– San Francisco Playhouse (Artistic Director Bill English & Producing Director Susi Damilano) have announced casting for their holiday show, a revival of the 1968 Broadway hit Promises, Promises to be directed by Bill English.

The cast will feature actors that are well known to Playhouse audiences, Jeffrey Brian Adams (Prince from Into the Woods), Monique Hafen* (Into the Woods, Camelot, My Fair Lady) and Johnny Moreno* (Camelot, My Fair Lady, Period of Adjustment) in the lead roles with Morgan Dayley, Joe Estlack, Rudy Guerrero*, Kathryn Fox Hart, Corinne Proctor*, Steven Shear and Leah Shesky.

Nominated for four Tony Awards and based on the 1960 Oscar-winning Billy Wilder film The Apartment, this raucous comedy features a book by Broadway legend Neil Simon with songs by the powerhouse writing team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, including such hits as “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Knowing When to Leave,” and the title song, “Promises, Promises.”

If you like Mad Men, you’re in luck. Infused with the swinging energy of early 1960s Manhattan, Promises, Promises tells the story of a lovelorn young executive and a romantically troubled waitress, knotted in a twist of sexual affairs and corporate shenanigans. In this apartment, office romances collide with office politics as you’ve never seen them before.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND November 13-23 Marines’ Memorial Theatre
– WestBeth Entertainment & SF Sketchfest present Henson Alternative’s PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED, a night of hilarious uncensored mayhem featuring over 60 original Henson puppets brought to life by a cast of six world-class puppeteers of The Jim Henson Company in a night of off the cuff comedy. SHN is proud to be the official ticketing partner for Henson Alternative’s PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED.

Created by award-winning director, producer, and writer Brian Henson and actor, director, and improvisational guru Patrick Bristow (Ellen, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Whose Line Is It Anyway?), PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED, formerly known as “Stuffed and Unstrung,” will play a limited 10 performance engagement November 13-23 at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, October 3 at 10am.

PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED is never the same show twice due to its improvisational nature, showcasing the wit, technique, and that trademark Henson dryness and sly anarchy. Expert puppeteers create twisted scenes and songs on the fly, as suggestions from the audience prompt the improvised story lines unfolding on stage. Unpredictable and irreverent, the outrageous and uninhibited PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED is a wild romp in which the skilled art of puppetry and spontaneous comedy collide as the fearless puppeteers set loose live onstage to explore the art of improvisational comedy.

After just the first few moments of watching and interacting with the puppets of PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED, you’ll realize this is no ordinary puppet show. The production delivers two-shows-in-one of improvised Henson puppetry. The hilarious puppet action is projected live on large screens flanking the stage, while the puppeteers race around below displaying their skills in full view of the audience. With live musical accompaniment and Patrick Bristow as host, this ‘psychotic puppet party’ also features a few recreations of classic pieces originally created by Jim Henson, Jane Henson, and Frank Oz that haven’t been seen by live audiences in decades.

In 2011, SF Gate said the show “combines the magic of first-rate Henson-style puppetry and the joy of ribald comedy with a fascinating and endlessly entertaining, bifurcated look at how TV puppetry works.” The SF Examiner called the show, “A wee bit naughty! Every performance has belly laughs if not falling-in-the-aisle hysteria.”
Back by popular demand, PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED is for adults only.
Ticket Information:
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 3 at 10am through shnsf.com and SHN Audience Services at 888-746-1799. Tickets range from $40-$50. Prices are subject to change.

SHN OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE MID-MARKET NEIGHBORHOOD TEENAGERS FROM TENDERLOIN AND SOMA DISTRICTS INVITED TO THE SHN GOLDEN GATE THEATRE TO SEE PIPPIN AND PARTICIPATE IN PRE- AND POST-SHOW ACTIVITIES

– SHN is partnering with The Golden State Division of The Salvation Army by inviting 50 middle school- and high school-age kids from the Tenderloin and SOMA districts to the SHN Golden Gate Theatre in Mid-Market to experience the 2013 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival PIPPIN and participate in exclusive pre- and post-show activities. This special event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4, starting at 12:30pm.

After helping kick off the new school year by donating 3,500 “Matilda” books as part of Mayor Ed Lee’s 9th Annual Mission and Tenderloin Backpack Giveaways in partnership with The Salvation Army and Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) respectively, SHN continues its mission to give back to the city of San Francisco by opening its doors to the SHN Golden Gate Theatre and providing teenagers from the Mid-Market area the chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime day at the theatre in conjunction with PIPPIN.

Starting at 12:30pm, acrobats featured in PIPPIN will meet the teens in the Mezzanine Lobby of the SHN Golden Gate Theatre for a pre-show workshop and lecture. The kids will not only hear from those involved with the production about what it takes to perform in a show, but the dedication needed to pursue your dreams. They will also learn circus tricks directly from the cast. At 1:00pm, the participants will be invited inside the theatre where they’ll watch rehearsal, something that is normally closed to the public. At 2:00pm, the students will see a live performance of the Tony Award-winning PIPPIN for free, and, upon the conclusion of the show, will participate in an exclusive post-show Q&A with cast members.

“The Salvation Army is all about providing opportunities, and the arts opens up a whole world of opportunities for young people,” said Major Robert Birks, San Francisco Metro Coordinator for The Salvation Army. “This is hugely important and could inspire a child to pursue the arts in their future. We thank SHN for making this possible.”

“Inviting teenagers, many of whom have never seen a Broadway show before, to the SHN Golden Gate to experience the Tony Award-winning PIPPIN is an exciting opportunity for SHN to give back to our community and inspire the youth of San Francisco,” said SHN Chief Executive Officer Greg Holland. “PIPPIN tells the story of a young man in search of an extraordinary life. We hope by experiencing the world of live theater, along with the whole experience of the day, we help inspire those participating to dream big and, like Pippin, strive for an extraordinary life.”

OREGON SHAKESPEARE NEWS

2014 Daedalus Project Raises $142,496 Record Sum will be disbursed to HIV/AIDS organizations at end of year

.— The Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s 27th annual Daedalus Project fundraiser for HIV/AIDS organizations totaled $142,496. The event on August 18 was produced by Claudia Alick, associate producer, community, and directed by Eduardo Placer, an actor with the company.

This year’s total exceeded last season’s by $3,200, and the popular Underwear Parade topped last year’s donations by $3,711 with a total of $21,145. Tickets for the afternoon reading of The Children’s Monologues and the evening variety show, along with general donations, raised approximately $60,000. Contributions also came from the Daedalus 5K Run, the sale of T-shirts, lemonade, baked goods, concessions, quilt raffle, an “Arts and Treasures” sale, and sales of Daedalus Pillows and Bears created by members of OSF’s Costume Department.

The ACT V: THE END OF AIDS Indiegogo campaign raised $7,240.

A new event this year was Daedalus Drinks/Daedalus Dines held on July 22, when participating local businesses donated a portion of their profits to Daedalus. This event raised $3,311.

For the second year, the Ashland Independent Film Festival and Coming Attractions Theatres teamed with OSF to put on the Daedalus FilmFest. Six original, award-winning documentary films about the on-going global HIV/AIDS crisis were screened. The event this year raised $2,380.

Each year following the benefit, the Festival distributes the funds to various local, regional, national and international organizations involved in the battle against HIV/AIDS. Those organizations receiving funds will be announced at the end of 2014.

“It was a hugely successful event,” said Executive Director Cynthia Rider. “We thank the company, community and audience members who contributed their time and money to making this event so memorable. We will disburse the funds to various organizations in the near future, and expect to be amazed again at how many lives these grants can affect in the fight against HIV/AIDS.”

The first Daedalus Project was organized by OSF actor and director James Edmondson in 1987, and the event, including this year, has raised $1.5 million for local, regional, national and international HIV/AIDS organizations. In the last 27 years, the Daedalus Project has created a tradition of remembrance, celebration and collective action for OSF’s company, community and audience.

The 2015 Daedalus Project will be held on Monday, August 24.
