You know what's funny? I'll tell you - for all of the "Rodgers was in a drunken haze" "Rodgers was a theatrical dinosaur" blah, blah, blah, the one thing that works in Do I Hear a Waltz is - wait for it - Rodgers and his music. Sondheim's lyrics are excellent, but it's the way Rodgers' music sits on them that makes the score a treat. Laurents' book is the biggest problem, so perhaps they should have been saying he was a smart-ass smarmy dinosaur, even then.

And the score IS a treat. I recorded the Pasadena Playhouse revival and listening to those songs with a full orchestra was heavenly. In fact, some of Rodgers' tunes are as good as anything he wrote. He, in my book, gets full credit for ANYTHING that works about this show. There, I've said it and I'm glad. All that said, I don't want to hear it with a piano.
