Tickets go on sale this Friday, Oct. 10, at 10am. Following the internationally acclaimed sold-out engagements on Broadway and London’s West End, BLITHE SPIRIT will play a strictly limited two week engagement January 20 through February 1, 2015 at the SHN Golden Gate Theatre, and San Francisco is one of only four U.S cities presenting this highly anticipated comedy. “SHN is thrilled to welcome Angela Lansbury reprising her Tony Award-winning role to San Francisco,” said Greg Holland, SHN Chief Executive Officer. “BLITHE SPIRIT is one of the many world-class productions we have planned for SHN audiences.” The production will play the SHN Golden Gate Theatre using the playhouse configuration, created by Tony-Award winning, San Francisco based scenic designer Douglas Schmidt. This arrangement, which provides an intimate 1600-seat experience for SHN Audiences, was previously used for the highly acclaimed productions of DOUBT starring Cherry Jones and Viola Davis (2006), WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF starring Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin (2007) and A BRONX TALE starring Chazz Palminteri (2008). Returning to the role of Madame Arcati, for which she won her fifth Tony Award® in 2009 for Best Featured Actress in a Play, Angela Lansbury (“Murder, She Wrote;” Sweeney Todd; Mame; Gaslight) will be joined by an all-star cast including Charles Edwards (“Downton Abbey,” The 39 Steps, Blithe Spirit – 2014 West End revival), Jemima Rooper (“The Black Dahlia;” One Man, Two Guvnors; Blithe Spirit – 2014 West End revival), Charlotte Parry (Coram Boy, The Importance of Being Earnest), Simon Jones (“Hitchhiker’s Guide,” Blithe Spirit – 2009 Broadway revival, 2014 West End Revival), Susan Louise O’Connor (Walk Two Moons, Blithe Spirit – 2009 Broadway revival) and Sandra Shipley (Anything Goes, Blithe Spirit – 2009 Broadway revival). On Friday Wily West will present DROWNING KATE by Morgan Ludlow – who most recently won the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Original Script for his play GORGEOUS HUSSY. The two plays will alternate every other Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Both plays run less than 90 minutes and will be directed by Wesley Cayabyab. On Tuesday, PlayGround playwrights attended a special presentation by the founders of Planet Earth Arts, a new initiative of Sustainable World Coalition, in preparation for the topic announcement for the Monday Night PlayGround season opener and inaugural Planet Earth New Play Festival, taking place at 8pm, Monday, October 20 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and being repeated in its entirety at 7:30pm, Tuesday, October 21 at Stanford’s Cubberley Auditorium. This morning, PlayGround announced the topic: IS EARTH F**KED?, drawn from a session of earth and space scientists at the Fall 2012 Meeting of the American Geophysical Union, held annually in San Francisco. Fifty Bay Area playwrights have just four-and-a-half days to generate their original short scripts inspired by the topic and the top six works will be presented as script-in-hand staged readings on October 20 and October 21.
