Andrea Martin in Pippin

Posted by: Dr._L 09:23 am EDT 10/13/14

I have been privileged to see some great performances in the theater. Angela Lansbury in the original production of Sweeney Todd. Jennifer Holliday in the original production of Dreamgirls. And now (at risk of overselling the experience), Andrea Martin who has stepped into the current run in SF of the Tony-winning, touring revival of Pippin.

Ms. Martin is quite simply perfection. With a shoulder roll, she can bring down the house. Her Berthe is an exquisite moment of carnality, joy, loss, wisdom and love. I was taken away during her performance Sunday. I don't remember the last time an actor thrilled me so deeply to pound my hands till they hurt and cheer till my throat was raw.

Theater lovers owe themselves the gift of the joy of witnessing a great actress giving a great performance. I will remember this for the rest of my life.
