In the review of "The Whale" the final sentence notifies us that the lead actor wears an effective fat suit and is, in fact, slim.

I have been reflecting why that was the most important idea to end the review. It rather reminds me of plays 30 years ago where reviewers felt compelled to let us know that the actors who played gays were really straight.

Is the idea of obesity so repellant that we must know it is an illusion or is the performance so effective that the reviewer must pull back the curtain and reveal the truth?
