Laura Benanti tonight

Posted by: MarkBearSF 02:05 am EST 11/08/14

Just got back from an amazing show!
Laura Benanti was everything you could wish for. She was in great voice and soooo charming. Speaking of which, after her show, she was taking great time with each person in line. I asked her if there was a return to Broadway in her future. She said "yes" but couldn't talk about it. I don't recall hearing any rumors - any guesses?

60 min show - will this be a new normal at Feinstein's?

I went Sat night and had a good time. She was wonderful and sang beautifully. But I was disappointed that her show was only 60 min long compared to the past shows (90 min) by others at the same venue. She said "I have to finish within 60 min" or something like that before the encore number. So I'm wondering if this will be Feinstein's new format??

I did get her CD after the show and it contains more songs than what she sang in SF, so she has more materials. If this 60 min show will be a new normal, then I don't think I'll go back even with Goldstar discount.

That's pretty typical for cabaret shows. I don't think I've ever been to one in NY that was longer than 60 minutes. Her live album from 54 Below is 69 minutes.

Not in San Francisco - I hope.

I go to a lot of cabaret shows in San Francisco at different venues and this was the 1st time a show didn't go to 85-90 minutes in length. I hope this is not a trend that is coming to the West Coast.

I'm not a big fan of cabaret and have only seen about a dozen acts mostly at feinsteins and the what it was called before. Every one was 90 minutes. I'm surprised to hear that 60 is the norm in NYC. Sometimes I enjoy the dialog more than the singing, so I assume cutting the act down eliminates a lot of the dialog.

On Friday night, she made reference (in a seemingly offhand manner in response to the audience reaction to "my last song") saying something like "Sorry guys! Y'know 'not to exceed 60 minutes'..."

She is a real sweetheart. An open and charming person.

She truly is. I'm in total love with her. She had a long line of people to buy a CD and meet her, yet gave each person a dedicated minute or two.

I also felt sorry for her with the added expectation of "selfies." Primarily for the awkwardness involved. First off, she got her exercise jumping up off her seat to stand for each person to pose for the selfie. Secondly, because of the demographics, many in line weren't exactly expert on doing it. (I started thinking they should have a "Pee-Wee Herman pull-down background screen, and a "smartphone holster" pre-aimed for the shot.)

I've seen that happen time and again. Particularly with cell phones. I have been to these occasions where the artist will have her personal representative there and they will take the photos.

On Sunday night there was a long line of people wanting to talk to Leslie Uggams and of course take photos of her. She sat through the whole process.
