| ----------------- OPENINGS ----------------- Aurora Theatre Company continues its 23rd season with the West Coast Premiere of Fraser Grace’s provocative BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE. First produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2005, this recent off Broadway hit was inspired by newspaper reports that Robert Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe, severely depressed and convinced he was haunted by the ghost of a dead comrade, sought treatment from a white psychiatrist. Shedding light on Mugabe’s demons, the sessions soon become a precarious power struggle between doctor and patient. Set against the aftermath of colonialism and revolution, BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE delves into the mind of one of the world’s most vilified leaders.Jon Tracy, who directed Aurora’s productions of Gidion’s Knot and The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, returns to helm BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE, called “[a] taut meditation on guilt and power” by TimeOut NY, and about which The New York Times said, “In Mr. Grace’s capable hands, Mugabe rightfully deserves a seat alongside Macbeth, Richard III and other tragic, power-siphoning Shakespearean antiheroes.” L. Peter Callender, who previously starred in Aurora’s productions of The Soldier’s Tale and Permanent Collection, returns to the company to play the title role of Robert Mugabe. BREAKFAST WITH MUGABE also features Dan Hiatt (Wittenberg, The Arsonists), Leontyne Mbele-Mbong (African-American Shakespeare Company, Lamplighters), and Adrian Roberts (TheatreWorks, California Shakespeare Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre). UNCENSORED – WestBeth Entertainment & SF Sketchfest present Henson Alternative’s PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED, a night of hilarious uncensored mayhem featuring over 60 original Henson puppets brought to life by a cast of six world-class puppeteers of The Jim Henson Company in a night of off the cuff comedy. SHN is proud to be the official ticketing partner for Henson Alternative’s PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED.Created by award-winning director, producer, and writer Brian Henson and actor, director, and improvisational guru Patrick Bristow (Ellen, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Whose Line Is It Anyway?), PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED, formerly known as “Stuffed and Unstrung,” will play a limited 10 performance engagement November 13-23 at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre. PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED is never the same show twice due to its improvisational nature, showcasing the wit, technique, and that trademark Henson dryness and sly anarchy. Expert puppeteers create twisted scenes and songs on the fly, as suggestions from the audience prompt the improvised story lines unfolding on stage. Unpredictable and irreverent, the outrageous and uninhibited PUPPET UP! – UNCENSORED is a wild romp in which the skilled art of puppetry and spontaneous comedy collide as the fearless puppeteers set loose live onstage to explore the art of improvisational comedy. The production delivers two-shows-in-one of improvised Henson puppetry. The hilarious puppet action is projected live on large screens flanking the stage, while the puppeteers race around below displaying their skills in full view of the audience. Finally! Join Nim, Fletch, Spru, Yammy and Naggy as they slug it out in the Central Pacific. It's the Second World War like you've never seen it before! The Battle of Midway was the turning point of the Pacific War. But it’s been made into a couple of movies, written up in dozens of histories, and even crept its way (nearly) into some musicals and straight plays. Where do we go from here? Utilizing camp, drag, gender fuck and a lot of expository writing, Theatre Rhino attempts to revolutionize this story just as the US and Japan revolutionized naval combat. This will be a high concept, low-tech extravaganza. The music is original but the story is borrowed. In this musical retelling the Battle of Midway becomes a battle of wills as childish admirals and glory seeking pilots chase each other about the Pacific Ocean. This farcical pugilalia shows up warfare for all its vanity and gory-glory seeking.Greenhorns will come to learn more about history. Aficionados will come to nitpick facts and roll their eyes at the grotesque liberties taken, liberties that are that much more obnoxious because they are imbedded in so much truth. They therefore can only be seen as corrupting and dangerous to the consumer. Beware. THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY! will be performed between Halloween and Thanksgiving – thus it will be irreverent but grateful. ---------------------------------- PLAYING----REVIEWS ARE UP ON THESE ------------------------------------- 42ND STREET MOON PRESENTS “THE BOY FRIEND” THRU -NOVEMBER 16, 2014 THE EUREKA THEATRE Music, Lyrics, and Book by Sandy Wilson Directed and Choreographed by Cindy Goldfield Music Direction by Dave Dobrusky A lighter-than-air spoof of 1920s musical comedies, The Boy Friend is one of the most delightful shows of the mid-20th century. If it seems that the government that you call “a fascist, surveillance state” has specifically targeted you, is specifically watching YOU (it’s not paranoia if they really are after you!), then what?
