A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, A.R. Gurney's LOVE LETTERS became an instant smash hit that was performed all over the country. The universality of the piece quickly led to the play being translated into 24 languages. In the last 26 years, productions of LOVE LETTERS have played in over 40 countries around the world. LOVE LETTERS opened to rave reviews on Thursday, September 18, 2014, with the New York Times exclaiming "The dying art of putting pen to paper to exchange news is being celebrated on Broadway," with The Hollywood Reporter adding, "LOVE LETTERS is that rare work whose emotional richness requires no embellishment in order to become a full-bodied theatrical experience. All that's needed are gifted actors."
LOVE LETTERS is a disarmingly funny and unforgettably emotional portrait about the powerful connection of love. Andrew Makepeace Ladd III wrote his first letter to Melissa Gardner to tell her she looked like a lost princess. They were both seven years old. For the next fifty years, through personal triumphs and despair, through wars and marriages and children and careers, they poured out the secrets of their hearts to each other. They defied a fate that schemed to keep them apart, and lived - through letters - for the one most meaningful thing, their undying love for each other.
LOVE LETTERS has scenic design by two-time Tony Award winner John Lee Beatty, costume design by Tony Award winner Jane Greenwood, lighting design by Tony Award winner Peter Kaczorowski and casting by Telsey + Company (William Cantler, CSA and Andrew Femenella, CSA). LOVE LETTERS is produced by Nelle Nugent, Barbara Broccoli, Frederick Zollo, Olympus Theatricals, Michael G. Wilson, Lou Spisto, Colleen Camp, Postmark Entertainment Group, Judith Ann Abrams/Pat Flicker Addiss and Kenneth Teaton in association with Jon Bierman, Tim Degraye, Daniel Frishwasser, Elliott Masie, Mai Nguyen and Scott Lane/Joseph Sirola.
