You Cant Take it With You - why is Ed gay?

Posted by: NewtonUK 10:48 am EST 11/13/14

Saw the mostly wonderful Scott Ellis revival of YOU CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU yesterday. The cast is mostly super, with special kudos to Annaleigh Ashford's Essie. James Earl Jones gives a wonderful, dignified, heartfelt performance.

The set is perhaps OTT. The curtain lines don't get their bump, as Kaufman and hart intended - instead we have to wait for the turntable to revolve, as music plays, and the 'button' at the end of the scene fades from memory. They could have save a couple hundred thousand dollars, and used a house curtain. But that's me.

My only quibble is - why is Ed, Essie's xylophone playing printing crazy husband played as gay?

No - those aren't just funny character choices the actor is making. He's playing a cliche-ridden gay man from a bad sitcom - all flapping hands and giggles, and silly walks. Nothing in any way related to the character of Ed Carmichael as written.

Why oh why?

It has to be on purpose - though when given permission to procreate with Essie he follows her upstairs with great sense of purpose.

Anyone else find this odd?
