''Saturday'' at the York with Steve: What a winner!

Posted by: WaymanWong 11:05 am EST 11/13/14

The York Theatre's marvelous Mufti revival of ''Saturday Night'' is sure to make your day. Stephen Sondheim and Julius P. Epstein's 1954-55 valentine to Brooklyn is such a joy, led by Ben Fankhauser (''Newsies'') and Margo Siebert (''Rocky'').

In Sondheim's first musical, Ted, Dino, Artie and Ray lament about their lousy luck with the ladies. Their best bud, Gene, an ambitious order clerk on Wall St. in 1929, longs to live the heavenly high life but falls for the more down-to-earth Helen. A case of mistaken identity and money woes ensue, but all's swell that ends swell.

Rife with witty rhymes (''peignoirs'' and ''Renoirs''), the score is so infectiously fun and abashedly romantic, with irresistible tunes like ''So Many People,'' ''A Moment With You'' and ''What More Do I Need?'' And Act I is capped off with a catchy choral number called ''One Wonderful Day'' that leaves you humming with such good cheer.

It's all delightfully directed by Stafford Arima, and Fankhauser and Siebert couldn't be more charming or disarming as Gene and Helen. The sunny and funny ensemble features Lindsay Mendez, Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Matthew Scott, plus Matthew Bauman, Jeremy Greenbaum, Greg Hamp and Jared Loftin shine as Ted, Dino, Artie and Ray.

''Saturday Night'' closes this Sunday as No. 100 in York's Mufti's series, but I'd say it's batting a thousand. By the way, Sondheim attended its final dress and reportedly pronounced it ''perfect.'' What more do you need? Go!
