Well, then, OP isn't the only one. I also found many stereotypically -- repeat, stereotypically -- gay choices on Brill's part in terms of body language. But I loved his performance overall, so I justified those choices to myself by thinking, "Well, none of the characters is represented as gay in the original script, so maybe this was an effort at inclusion on the part of the actor and the director."

And anyway, having a gay man married to a presumably straight woman -- or, for that matter, to a lesbian -- would arguably fit in well with this highly unconventional family.
