It does seem like an awfully difficult role, but Marian Seldes won a Tony for it. Although Kerr (who didn't much like the play) felt she didn't succeed in the role, but I presume the other critics did. Someone did.

But, yeah, it kind of defeated Mary Beth Hurt and Lee Remick and I've read negative reviews of some other actresses who've played it.
