I saw the original production at a preview. I, like most of the audience, was pretty put off. This was, after all, only four years after Virginia Woolf, his second original play since then, and I don't think people expected, or knew how to receive his odd and oblique style, which he has since evolved into nicely, but then came off as incredibly static. Also, I don't think Alan Schneider, the director, was comfortable with this style, he was more of an action director, my memory is he did nothing to stress the language of the piece. Anyway, at that point it was hard to see what Albee wanted to accomplish with the play; when the second couple came in with no reason, the audience simply reacted with laughter. I think now, the play, in its original vision, (not updated) and seen in the context of Albee's work in the last forty years, seems much more accessible. I myself, found the Hepburn-Scofield movie version, very astutely directed by Tony Richardson, to be the best representation of the play that I have seen.
