I said this to my date (female) who thought the same thing. So did a 40 something producer friend sitting behind me. As we discussed this at the first intermission, and middle aged matinee lady passing by us chimed in - 'I was wondering the same thing ...'

So 4 out of 4 in my area of conversation at the Longacre. And none of us were puzzled - we all saw the same thing - found it obvious.

How do Kaufman and Hart described Ed (you recall them, they wrote the play)-

'ED CARMICHAEL comes down the stairs, a nondescript young man in his mid-thirties. He removes his coat and crosses to xylophone.'

Like a younger Robert Sean Leonard, for example ... his quirk is his xylophone playing and his passion for printing.

The Sycamore quirks are the things they choose to do, or not to do - as exemplified by Grandpa. A playwright, a ballerina, a printer, two fireworks makers, a man who attends commencement ceremonies.

The 'comic' characters are Gay Wellington (drunk actress), Countess Olga (over the top Russian emigre), Boris (Mad Russian ballet teacher).
