I don't know if it makes sense to split the characters in "comics" vs. "eccentrics" categories. We had an earlier thread here that tried to find a photo of the original Countess Olga and it's probably that she was played like a tattier version of Greta Garbo in Grand Hotel... exiled white Russians were still running around nyc at that time. And Olga has her eccentricities as well. Henry Travers who played the original Grandpa was largely a comic character actor as was Josephine Hull... Kristine Nielson could be Hull's ancestor.
