I think the whole thing sounds like a mess waiting to happen--and I say that as a long-time fan of the single-frame comic strip and the Shirley Booth sitcom. The "plot" sounds a bit too grim for the Hazel Burke most of us remember, and I really don't see a huge intuitive audience for this--and I see this as someone rapidly heading for 60 myself. "Annie," which had some fun and even touching songs, also had the cachet of a desire for New Deal optimism--and somehow, at least to me, seemed to touch on a character still present quite widely in the American imagination. As wonderful as Hazel was, I don't see people flocking to a musical inspired by her. What's next--"Gasoline Alley: The Operetta"? I'd almost rather see someone truly go for broke and do a stage musical based on "The Pruitts of Southhampton"--at least that had a theme song with lyrics. Or "The Patty Duke Show"--the ladies from "Side Show" could do that next! "They're cousins, conjoined twin cousins, all the way!"
