I saw the original production and the circumstances were similar to yours. I had seen the film version of "Who's Afraid…' but not the stage production. I was a senior in high school and had seen "American Dream' at a local college.
I did not understand "A Delicate…" at the time. I do remember Seldes and her performance was "theatrical" which now, many years later, seems just right. She played Julia as a grown woman stunted as a temperamental teen who insists on getting her own way. I now interpret this as the character's insistence on being able to return to her own "illusion" whenever she considers it necessary to do so.
