I'm glad you agree. Maybe the change that's needed is in the credit itself. We don't honor the engineer who takes a set designer's design and makes it function. How is this really different?

None of this suggests that a great audio engineer is not essential for a show. In fact, that's why you have the long list of people supporting the sound designer's petition: these folks make everyone else's work sound good (and that includes the actors and musicians as well as the composers and lyricists and directors and everyone else who is involved in things audible.
