Although some musical directors are not always so thrilled with the work of sound designers. Or at least one, Ted Sperling, has expressed frustration. I'd bet that others feel the same way — that it's very frustrating to work to create certain balances and have the audience not hear the effects that a musical director has worked to create but to hear something else instead.

A big part of the problem, of course, is that most orchestras on Broadway are mostly buried under the stage (or are backstage or upstairs or in a basement) and will barely be heard (or not be heard at all) unless they are heavily amplified.

This is yet another reason why putting back the long-gone (50 years now) musical director award may not make much sense.
