I think that's undoubtedly true. And perhaps there is a sentiment that subtracting the artistic license from the SD qua audio engineer would reset the balance (pun only partly intended). At the symphony the other night, I heard a familiar piece in which the conductor brought the horns down a notch or two from where the usually are, making the point he wanted to make (rightly or wrongly). On Broadway, the SD could easily "correct" that. It's an interesting matter, this musical collaboration. How often do orchestrators, MDs and SDs sit down and address these things? And who has control? I'm not sure I really know; I'm sure someone here does. In theory, but not reality, I think it is the director. What I do know is that audio engineers get told what to do.
