Some of what he objects to sounds perfectly fine

In reply to: David Cote on audience behavior at "The River" - Charlie_Baker 11:10 am EST 11/15/14

I don't really get why he feels that the audience should not applaud after scenes. It's not like applauding after scenes is some new disruptive practice. The idea that applauding after scenes is verboten is the new idea.

At one time, audiences regularly applauded between movements of a symphony or sonata. Now that's considered boorish or, at best, uneducated. But some people feel that audiences should feel free to applaud between movements. It was expected in Haydn's day, wasn't it? And Mozart's and Beethoven's? I think so.

And while I'm not a great fan of applauding actors on their entrances, it's also not like that is some new low in theatre behavior. I imagine that some stars of the past would have been upset not to receive entrance applause.

I'm probably at least as bothered as anyone else by certain forms of bad audience behavior, but I don't think that entrance applause (unless it gets out of hand) or applauding between scenes even counts as bad audience behavior.
