When I was a kid, it wasn't just dressing up for school trips to the theatre - I seem to remember that the sports teams used to have to be dressed up with jackets/ties/etc when travelling to a game. This may still be true in some schools. It seemed to be more about a sign of respect and maturity as responsible students than it was about the event itself.

So yes, I know exactly what you're saying, but I think sometimes such theatre trip dress codes have more to do with representing the school than in a "you have to wear a tie to go to the theatre" mentality. Though obviously I'm sure some people do want their kids to be in such habits.
