The Joyce Theater is a repurposed movie theatre that was called the Elgin, opened in 1942, and initially showed Spanish-language films, then revival and cult films, and finally adult movies, so I don't think that it was built with stage acoustics in mind.

That said, the interior was completely gutted and redesigned by architect Hugh Hardy to become the Joyce, so attention may have been paid to acoustics then. Only the facade and the marquee are original.

The musical "American Passion" played there in the summer of 1983, and those actors could be heard, though I'm pretty sure there was miking involved.

I was the Joyce's first full-time box office treasurer, from fall 1982 to winter 1984.
