really? because i've seen her i don't know how many times (but definitely double digits) over the years in cabaret and concert settings and i've never seen her give a bad performance. not once.
i think she's tended to speed up over the years. one night at 54 below i actually whispered into the spousal unit's ear "is it just me or is she late for a train" but even that night she was terrific. i haven't seen this run but the last run of shows at 54 below was the best i've ever seen her - in that kind of setting.
other than the last revival of FOLLIES the show i returned to the most was her GYPSY. i don't know what it was about those shows but i'd have gone every week if i could have afforded to. i never saw her give anything less than a great performance in that run, including the night of the freak out which i still maintain had as much to do with the fact that it was the night before closing she was being great and the crowd was sitting on it's hands as it did with any flash. i'm not saying the freakout was unjustified but i can't help but wonder if on a less special night earlier in the run with a more responsive crowd it might not have happened.
i've seen her in, i think, every broadway production since EVITA and i was at les mouches more than once. i've also seen her in (far) less intimate auditoria. i've seen her fight direction (SWEENY TODD) material (ANARCHIST) and both (WOMEN ON THE VERGE) and win every time.
i'm not being a fan boy. i've seen even some of the best performers in cabaret (i think ever) like marilyn maye and julie wilson have not entirely successful nights.
i loved elaine stritch's work completely and unconditionally but i saw her have ... challenging ... nights both on broadway and at the carlyle. if i can be critical of a performance of hers i can be critical of anybody's performance. if lupone would have stunk one night i'd admit it and go right back again the next chance i got.
i honestly have never seen her be outright bad.
i'm not saying patti lupone hasn't ever given a bad performance or a bad concert. nor am i saying the ones you weren't impressed with were in fact good and you got it wrong. i'm just saying i've seen her enough to be comfortable challenging you on the idea that she's "wildly inconsistent."
