SATURDAY NIGHT Friday night - schauspieler 02:01 pm EST 11/15/14 |

i saw it friday night. while no one's going to confuse it with a masterpiece it's so charming i don't understand why it isn't done more often.
if i was running a black box or a small regional theater i'd schedule this thing in a heartbeat. it's a sondheim musical that hasn't been done to death. the sets are probably the most cost-prohibative thing about it and that could be easily worked around. the projections in this worked well enough for what they were being asked to do.
SATURDAY NIGHT has something really timely going for it. it's about community and the loss of that is prime material to be explored theatrically right now. there are good parts, a couple of excellent songs. seriously, off off or some small regional out there has a gold mine just sitting there waiting for it.
i don't think it needs a big broadway production - though, i'd be there if someone did one - because i don't think the piece has enough weight to merit it. but it's sondheim material that hasn't been mined and mined and mined and there are definitely riches to excavate.
i'm sorry one of the cast members got sick. i thought the singing - especially the guys - was strong and the singing was my favorite part of this production.
i liked ben fankhauser in NEWSIES but watching him friday night i thought this guy's a real leading man.
a very satisfying musicals in mufti night for me. hope the actor gets better.
