THE RIVER...zzzzzzzzzzzz!

Posted by: boyartist 10:01 am EST 11/17/14

The night I saw "The River", the huge crowd waiting to enter the theatre was buzzing with excitement. This feeling continued through until Hugh Jackman made his entrance. There was no entrance applause, but you could sense that this group of theatre goers were very happy to be in the same room with this actor.

However, after awhile, all of that positive energy was drained from the air. "The River" might be a clever script, with all kinds of symbolic meaning, but for me, it was a very dull evening.

People all around me were dozing off. I was fighting to stay awake. I wanted to stay awake, hoping this piece would take off, but I kept nodding off.

After the respectful curtain call, there was a very somber mood as the audience exited. I don't think I was in the minority that night, with thinking this was a snoozer!

A lady in back of me commented, "For this they want two fifty for premium seats?"

A mob of stage door enthusiast were waiting for Jackman. They seemed excited, I would guess they hadn't sat through the play.

Well a friend of mine who loves Hugh Jackman and goes to see his shows multiple times thought the show was great.

I still think it's a play that benefits from more than one visit. There are clues to catch, monologues to savor and some pretty good acting going on at Circle in the Square. Not every play is everyone's cup of tea--or in this case, maybe fish soup. But it's haunting piece that deserves to be seen.

knowing that not much is going to happen, one might not anticipate and just listen. on the other hand, i'm probably too impatient and would still think--just get on with it. they set the mood nicely in the intimate theater--i just wanted the trees to turn into giants!
