Matt Dengler/The Underclassman

This is a gem of a show I would recommend if anyone I knew was making a trip to the city. Beautiful score, wonderful cast, and interesting story based on known people.I've long been a fan of Peter Mills' work and really like to see his shows produced more.

I've seen Matt Dengler in at least three shows, and he has always been perfection. He's a standout in this as F. Scott Fitzgerald. Jessica Grové (who appears the same age as when I saw her 6 years ago) is lovely and in fine voice. The supporting cast is on par.

Personal note: got a nice surprise seeing Billy Hepfinger in this cast, making his New York debut. I saw him perform probably ten years when he was in high school and recently in the region, and I'm happy to see he has continued this career. Interestingly, he is a Princeton grad and was in the Triangle Club, which is depicted in a different age in this musical. Congratulations, Billy.

THE UNDERCLASSMAN is, indeed, a gem. I've been excited about the chance to see this musical, and it lived up to my high hopes. Cara Reichel and Peter Mills have done splendid work on all fronts. The book is intelligent, engrossing, and almost poetic in spots; Mills' score is brimming with superb melodies and clever lyrics. Reichel's direction, ably assisted by Christine O'Grady's choreography, is fluid, elegant, and stylish.

THE UNDERCLASSMAN is grandly romantic and, ultimately, heartbreaking and moving. Matt Dengler and Jessica Grove' are terrific as Fitzgerald and his first love, Ginevra King, both bringing depth, strength, and fine voices. I also thought Marrick Smith was a standout, with a sensitive and touching performance as Fitzgerald's close friend, JP Bishop; he does well with the beautiful "A Place Apart," my favorite song in this rich score.

This is a wonderful evening of compelling and atmospheric musical theater, given a first rate production. If you have the chance to get a ticket, don't miss THE UNDERCLASSMAN.
