Indian Ink and Father Comes Home from the Wars This Past Weekend -- spolier

Posted by: lowwriter 10:53 am EST 11/17/14

I thought Indian Ink was just wonderful. This was the play that should have been in a larger theater for more people to see. The play had some structural parallels to Arcadia. I was so impressed by the direction, the pacing, the acting. I know Romola Garai got a mixed notice in the Times but I think she has the role down now. And Rosemary Harris and the rest of the cast were all lovely. Visually the play was a treat as well. Garai spoke after the play and said she appreciated having a juicy part about an artist. She said it may be hard for contemporary audiences to understand what an outcast her character would be in British society in her time. And Harris's character was also not conventional, being a mistress of a married man. I'm grateful Roundabout staged this play, I just wish it were running longer. I wanted to go back and there are no seats for next weekend.

Father Comes Home from the War was also a pleasure for me. I found it very moving but was surprised at the humor as well. Act One was particularly strong. Act Two, which I guess was part three was not quite as compelling and I found the dog talking for a long time a bit far fetched.

Question for those who have seen it: Was Penny pregnant in Act Two? I think a character referred to her having a baby. Was it Hero's child? If so, why didn't she tell him?

In part 3, Penny is pregnant with Homer's baby.

Thanks! Homer and Hero's names stared getting confusing after a while!

Both Ms. Garai (of the film “Atonement” and television’s “The Hour”) and Ms. Harris (a bona fide theater star since the 1950s) are masters at casually dispensing frilly epigrams, while hinting at an underlying bedrock of purposefulness....Ms. Garai and Mr. Bamji generate a marvelous, bashfully sexy, cross-cultural chemistry.

Not a mixed review at all.

Thanks for the correction!

I was thrilled to see Garai in this, a much better showcase for her than King Lear/The Seagull at BAM

You could still say he wasn't entusiastic enough!

I agree. This was such a special theater experience for me. But I love seeing Indian actors on stage, too, and there are so few productions in New York that cast them in parts.
