I saw that revival of Sweeney Todd a lot (as my earlier post attests), and mostly with Patti as Lovett. (I did see Judy Kaye twice) I thought her performance was very much in keeping with the spirit of the production, and wouldn't say that she "fought direction" at all. In fact, I'd say it's fairly clear in the differences between her Lovett from the Philharmonic/San Francisco productions and the Broadway revival that her Broadway Lovett was a very specifically-crafted interpretation.

Furthermore, she and Doyle are very close friends, to the point where they've vacationed together with their spouses several times. I doubt they would reach that level of intimacy if she were openly hostile and fighting his direction.
